People prepare for the winter season differently. Perhaps you and your family take the time to set up decorations and shoot photos for a card that you send out to your friends and family. Or maybe you take the time to bundle up and watch your favorite movies and TV shows. That’s the beauty of the winter, the cold outside makes the warm and cozy inside of your home seem that much more enticing.
But many homeowners don’t exactly have a plan to prepare their HVAC systems for the winter. Your heater is one of the important things you rely on in order to live your life comfortable. If something were to happen to your heating system, or if your heating bills were to increase, it might affect your home comfort and your winter traditions. We can’t let that happen!
For customers in Wenonah, Glassboro, and Swedesboro, follow along with some interesting tips to jump start your HVAC system for the winter weather. And don’t forget, if you encounter any problems, you can call our team for heating service in Gloucester County!
1. Test Your Heat
First, go ahead and turn on your heating system. Whether you’ve got a gas furnace or a heat pump, it should be a matter of flipping a switch or changing the setting on your thermostat. If you need to do this on your thermostat, we’ll get to that later.
Most furnaces have a switch nearby or at least something that denotes them being “on” or “off.” If your system is on, then it should be easy to manipulate with the thermostat.
2. Check Your Thermostat
Next, make sure your thermostat is working correctly. Take a few hours to play around with it while you do chores at home. Set the temperature up to the high 60s and see how long it takes for the system to turn on and blast some powerful heat into your home. Then, correct the temperature to something more efficient now that you know it’s working.
If your heating system doesn’t turn on at all, or if the setting seems incorrect on your thermostat, then you might need repairs. If the system can heat your home to the high 60s, you should be in good shape for the rest of the winter.
3. Clean Around Your System
Make sure you take the time to clean off dust around your HVAC system and your thermostat. Your HVAC unit will need access to fresh air in order for the unit to work properly. Change out the air filter while you’re at it, so you get another 1–3 months of efficient heating.
4. Check Vents and Investigate Odors
Vents shouldn’t be blocked by furniture or boxes in your home, since they’re required for adequate heating and efficiency. Also, if your furnace is giving off strange odors (other than the smell of dust being burned when you first turn it on), then it might be time to get it fixed.
5. Schedule Maintenance or Repairs
If you detect nothing wrong with your furnace, it might be a good idea to just schedule maintenance so it can stay efficient and powerful. However, if any of these tips brought something wrong to your attention, call our team for repairs.
